The internationally acclaimed and eclectic designer Patricia Urquiola reveals the third generation of Laufen's SaphirKeramik - she is taking this extraordinary material with great sensitivity into a third dimension - creating this new collection with the name: Sonar.

Expressive and yet minimalist, Sonar’s formal language plays with arcs and angles, emphasizing the slender lines of SaphirKeramik. To further enhance the lightness of the objects, Urquiola and Laufen developed a fine, three-dimensional texture for the external surfaces of the washbasin bowls.

SaphirKeramik remains a protagonist in Laufen’s production and it continues transforming the way interior design is applied in the world of bathroom culture.

The textured version can be selected as an optional alternative to the traditional smooth surface and is reminiscent of sound waves propagating in water.

The Sonar collection includes floor-standing and wall-mounted washbasins, two washbasin bowls, and a double washbasin bowl, also available in matte white and all made of SaphirKeramik together with a new furniture collection.

Additionally, Laufen Austria AG- with its production sites at Wilhemsburg and Gmunden- was awarded the EMAS environmental prize for outstanding environmental performance. The Uniform Plumbing Code (cUPC) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) are trade organizations that cooperatively meet to create mechanical design and test routines for plumbing products. These are trade organizations tasked with creating guidelines for safe and interchangeable products that provide value for consumers and competition among manufacturers. All of Laufen Bathroom ceramic products (unless noted otherwise) meet the design requirements and laboratory testing demands of these organizations. Organizations that provide this testing routine include the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO Group), which has issued several of Laufen’s certifications.

In your opinion as a designer, which new creative possibilities do SaphirKeramik offer?

The wafer-thin yet robust walls, lightweight characteristics, surface finish, and plasticity make the SaphirKeramik material unique.

Which technical challenges did you have to overcome during the development of the Sonar collection?

The surfaces are delicate and thin but define spatial volumes as a whole. Together with a subtle balance of edges and curves, dialogue between elementary forms that harmoniously interact with one another makes the design solutions unique. The sloping surfaces on the base of the basin guide the water smoothly to a transverse recess that obscures the drain both ingenuously and elegantly.

Which is the most impressive building or architecture you have seen recently? And why?

The headquarters of the Fondazione Feltrinelli in Milan, designed by Herzog & de Meuron. In my opinion, the building symbolizes Milan. It is a city that looks toward the future, is constantly changing, is in a state of radical upheaval, represents a new place for people to meet - not only for the residents of Milan - and is a city of culture designed by major architects.

What are your favorite everyday belongings?

I don't really have a special attachment to a specific object. In my working life, I often use my mobile phone to stay in constant touch with family, employees, and friends.

What do you do to relax and where is your favorite place to do it?

My passion for my profession helps me relax. I am lucky to have a job that I love, that completely fulfills me, and that I can get really enthusiastic about. My cultural imprint is inspired by memories of emotions and instinct. I feel drawn toward reaching every achievement possible.

What must a bathroom offer and how should it look so that you feel comfortable using it?

Nowadays, areas of our living space have a wide variety of different functions: a shower is longer a place of cleanliness, but also of well-being; colored lights are used on the walls, and you have the choice of selecting different types of water jet, from relaxing to invigorating and so on. The bath is a private space, an intimate area where there is a fundamental need for physical comfort and whose function has become self-evident. The space we dedicate to ourselves is becoming more extensive and the selection of each individual element contributes to highlighting this concept of well-being.

About Laufen

About Laufen_Transforming bathroom spaces

The personality of this highly traditional Swiss brand reflects a symbiosis of design, quality, and functionality. Laufen, the premium brand under the ROCA umbrella, is one of the world's leading manufacturers with a global distribution network.

About_Laufen_2_-_1892_Year_Of_Foundation From_Local_Foundations_to_Global_Player

When the company Laufen was founded in Switzerland in 1892, sanitary conditions were well below today's standards and level of convenience - standards to which Laufen, the only sanitary porcelain manufacturer producing exclusively in Europe, contributed.

Laufen is aware of the great importance that building information management (BIM) will have on future business processes, both at the local and global levels. Many project participants already invest part of their resources in this platform. The system is based on a virtual model using parametric objects, providing all project participants with information that evolves throughout the life cycle of the building.

Production Process

Since 1892 Laufen signifies craftsmanship.

Laufen's visionary work with ceramics requires knowledge of substance, an experimental approach, and the ability to translate the ideas into an industrial process. Laufen processes the delicate material with its passion and attention. Laufen pays great attention to details in order to achieve the best Swiss quality.

Smarter, larger, more effective, more forward-looking: Laufen always set their sights somewhat higher. This includes resource-saving, handling, and intelligent recycling during the production process as well as using products that reduce the amount of water used for flushing.

Every single toilet, urinal, and bidet is subject to a vacuum test and checked for flushing ability.

A thorough visual check after each stage of production guarantees that only perfect pieces are manufactured in the production process. Employees confirm the perfect condition of each piece after every state of production with their personal mark.

The final check at Laufen guarantees what the company stands for reliability, precision, and function in all possible colors and shapes.

Production Plants

Production sites in Central Europe: Laufen ranks as one of the leading international bathroom manufacturers. That is no coincidence: Laufen draws its bathroom and ceramics expertise from the experience and tradition of its production sites.

Laufen understands that the biggest impacts to the environment are caused by the overuse, or incorrect use of materials, and by fossil fuel energy. Therefore, its sustainability strategy focuses on three fronts:

Zero Waste policy in all production sites: A commitment to continuously improve production processes, with a view to optimize raw material usage and eliminate waste.

Increase energy efficiency: Making use of heat recovery technology in factories and making a move towards clean energy.

Product and material innovation: A drive for innovation, a sophisticated understanding of design, and a deeply embedded culture of collaboration are at the heart of every new product development. As such, Laufen is able to offer complete bathroom solutions that ensure comfort, a long-lasting lifecycle, reduction in water and energy consumption, and easy maintenance.

Laufen’s commitment to sustainability is embedded in its vision to be the best premium bathroom brand and to grow sustainably and responsibly. Thus, going forward, Laufen pledges to adopt a holistic approach to the lifecycle of its products, devising strategies to improve on all stages.

SaphirKeramik, patented and available on the market, is one of the latest globally significant innovations from Laufen. This revolutionary, ceramic material reaches its exceptional hardness blended with corundum, a colorless mineral, which is a component of sapphires. This gives SaphirKeramik a flexural strength equal to that of steel. Yet it has the potential to be wafer-thin, giving designers almost infinite freedom to experiment – and tear up the rulebook of bathroom design.
