33 lbs of 2" - 4" (5-10 cm) of rounded olivine sauna stones. We highly recommend using rounded stones in HUUM heaters to compliment the design and have milder steam. The stones are durable and have high heat capacity.

Choose your stones wisely

Throwing water on the stones is how you regulate heat and steam in the sauna. The shape, size and composition of the stones and the way they are arranged make all the difference. We recommend rounded stones because they provide a milder steam. Thanks to the rounded shape the water can reach inner layers of stones and evaporate gradually instead of evaporating all at once from the top layer. Since they are very visible in HUUM heaters, you need both smaller and bigger stones to avoid big noticeable gaps. We also suggest laying smaller stones and more close together on the top to accumulate the heat better.

      About HUUM

The team consists of enthusiastic sauna fans who believe in the importance of sauna for health and well-being. All of them grew up in Estonia where it would be hard to imagine not going to the sauna at the end of a busy working week, after a cold winter day or on a nice summer evening in the countryside. Sauna means taking time for yourself, regenerating your body and mind, staying healthy and just feeling good. That is why we think that sauna should be available to everybody and everywhere.

      Story of HUUM

      3 generations of sauna traditions

The founder of HUUM, Siim Nellis, is actually the third one in his family to produce sauna heaters. His grandfather was a skilled oven-builder with a lot of experience in building sauna stoves and his father is also active in sauna heater production. Siim continues to carry on these traditions, connecting the Estonian sauna building knowledge with modern design and innovative technology.

How the first design sauna heater was born

Sauna heaters have been developed in countries with long sauna traditions without necessarily paying much attention to design. In the search for a more contemporary and efficient design for sauna heaters Siim Nellis turned to the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2011. The product design students of the academy proposed different designs, among which one design stood out. It was inspired by a water drop and had a hemispheric shape. In 2012 the heater was developed for production and it became known as DROP. Unlike other sauna heaters before, DROP had a unique round shape, well-optimized use of metal and an increased stone capacity, which allowed the electric heater to produce a mild steam similar to wood-burning sauna stoves.

In 2015 DROP sauna heater won the prestigious Red Dot Award: Product Design, one of the most important international awards for exceptionally good design. DROP sauna heater was acknowledged for a well-implemented design solution.

      Encouraging active and healthy lifestyle

HUUM encourages active and healthy lifestyle by sponsoring sports and being active ourselves. They sponsor HUUM IRONMAN triathlon team which consists of young talented athletes. Another team sponsored by them is the Estonian women’s indoor hockey team Sparta who won the Estonian championship in 2018. Their own staff is currently active in disc golf, with their proudest moment being winning the first place in the Estonian enterprises disc golf tournament in April 2019.

      Craftsmanship

Take a peek into our production process and discover how our sauna heaters and remote controls are made.

HUUM products are made entirely in Estonia

HUUM heaters, control units and other products are made entirely in Estonia with the help of different partners. Did you know that the seemingly simple design of our heaters actually requires a quite complex production process? That is why we have partnered up with Estonia’s leading metal work companies to guarantee the best possible quality in each step of the production. Most of the raw materials used in the production, such as stainless steel and electronic components, are imported.

The making of HUUM heaters requires a lot of manual work

Since we got a little creative with our heaters, it isn’t really possible to produce them in fully automated process lines. Getting all the metal rods into the right length, the right thickness and bent in the right shape means a lot of manual work for the metal workers. Our heaters are made of stainless steel and go through shot blasting and acid treatment in order to get their final refined appearance.

Remote controls that are smart on the inside and beautiful on the outside

The innovative electronic solutions of HUUM remote controls and app are the creation of some of the bright minds of our hometown Tartu. It took five years to develop and improve the technology that we currently use. Oshino Electronics Estonia takes care of the production of the remote controls, which come in wooden and different colored plastic cases. The wooden cases are handmade out of thermo-treated ash, giving each one a unique look.

      Less packaging is more

We use as little packaging material as possible to reduce unnecessary waste and use recycled materials for our products where possible. For example, the case of the main module of the control unit is made of recycled plastic.
