Award-Winning Design
Click Here to Know More About The Red Dot Design AwardsHUUM won the world's most prestigious design awards with two productsEstonian design heater manufacturer HUUM OÜ participated in the prestigious international design competition “Red Dot Award” and won a product design award for two products. The prize went to the electric heater CLIFF and the sauna control panel UKU. The latest electric heater in the product range, CLIFF, is compact and has extremely short safety distances, making it the ideal solution for smaller saunas. The small safety distances are achieved by optimizing the structure and placement of the internal air tunnel. CLIFF is designed by Mihkel Güsson and the engineer is Anti Reiman. Another award-winning product, UKU sauna controller, makes sauna heating easy and comfortable. Already seven years ago HUUM came out with a remote control, which only now other competitors are catching up with. By using UKU sauna controller it is possible to control the sauna locally, via Wi-Fi network or with a built-in GSM module. Through the latter two it is possible to control the sauna from a mobile application all over the world. UKU is designed by Mihkel Güsson. Maarja Lind, HUUM’s Design Manager, is responsible for further developments in UKU design. The UKU app is designed by Keijo Kraus. Red Dot CEO Professor Dr. Peter Zec on the laureates“The winners of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2021 were particularly impressive this year. The design of their products is excellent, in terms of both the aesthetic and the functionality. It’s not easy to prevail in such a strong field of competitors and to win over our jury. Consequently, I want to congratulate the laureates very sincerely on their success,” said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot. The Red Dot Award is no stranger to HUUM. In 2015 HUUM’s first electric heater DROP, designed by Mihkel Masso, also received a design award. It is gratifying to note that by 2021 ten Estonian products have won the Red Dot award, three of which belong to HUUM. The award-winning products can be found in exhibitions, online and in the yearbook CLIFF and UKU can be seen in the online exhibition on the Red Dot website from 21 June 2021. That date also marks the beginning of the Red Dot Design Week, during which this year’s award winners and HUUM will be celebrated online. From 22 June 2021, CLIFF and UKU will also be included in the exhibition “Design on Stage” in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen, where all of the award-winning products are showcased. Visitors to the museum can experience the quality of the designs in a space that features contemporary design solutions and historical industrial architecture. The Red Dot Design Yearbook 2021/2022 comes out in August. The publication provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art and trends in product design. About the Red Dot Design Award:In order to appraise the diversity in the field of design in a professional manner, the Red Dot Design Award breaks down into the three disciplines of Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. With more than 18,000 entries, the Red Dot Award is one of the world’s largest design competitions. In 1955, a jury convened for the first time to assess the best designs of the day. In the 1990s, Red Dot CEO Professor Dr. Peter Zec developed the name and brand of the award. Ever since, the sought-after distinction “Red Dot” has been the revered international seal of outstanding design quality. The award winners are presented in the yearbooks, museums and online. Steam like in a traditional sauna
HUUM heaters are built by using very small amounts of metal so that the heat comes mainly from the stones and only very little from the metal. This way we can maximize the good negative ions from the stones, like in traditional saunas, and keep the positive ions from the metal at a minimum. Together with a high stone capacity this is our secret to healthy, mild and long-lasting steam.
Sauna Room
Wall materials and insulating the sauna room
In a sauna with electric heating, all massive heat accumulating wall surfaces (brick, glass brick, rendering etc.) must be insulated to use the electric heater with a regular output.
Click Below To Know More About Sauna Room
The following sauna wall and ceiling construction is considered to be sufficiently insulated:
In order to use the heater with a regular output, it would be practical to bring the ceiling of the sauna lower (regular 2100 mm – 2300 mm, min. height of sauna room 1900 mm) so that the volume of the sauna room diminishes. The ceiling is insulated with an insulation laer at least 100 mm thick and boarded according to the method described above. Wood should be used to cover internal surfaces; an exception may be made for heat resistant walls in the vicinity of the heater. ATTENTION! Insulating the heat barrier has to be approved by the fire inspector. Insulating flues in use is forbidden! NB! Covering the walls or floor with light protective material, for example, mineral tiles that are installed directly on the surface of the walls or ceiling might cause the dangerous overheating of the wall or ceiling material. |
Darkening of the sauna room wallsDue to heat, the wood material in the sauna room darkens in time. If you use wood protection products, you may notice that the wall above the heater darkens before long. The darkening process is also caused by the fine stone dust, breaking away from the heater stones and lifted up by the airflow. If you follow the producer’s instructions upon installing the heater, the flammable materials in the sauna room will not heat to a dangerous level. The highest allowed temperature for the wall and ceiling surfaces is 140˚C. |
Floor of the sauna room
The heater stones in use crumble due to temperature changes. The pieces and pebbles breaking away from the heater stones are washed on the sauna’s floor with the steam-making water. Hot stone parts may damage plastic flooring under and near the heater. Heater stone particles and sprays from the steam-making water (e.g., with iron content) may absorb into the light joints of a tile floor. In order to avoid aesthetic damage (caused by the reasons mentioned above), ceramic tiles and dark joint filler should be used under and around the heater. |
Ventilation of the sauna
In order to assure a sufficient oxygen supply and fresh air, the sauna’s ventilation must be as efficient as possible. It is advisable to direct the fresh air into the sauna room from above the heater stones. As an alternative, the fresh air may be directed in from under the heater The air inlet must be equipped with an adjustable valve. The exhaust valve must be installed in the opposite wall from the heater at least 20 cm above the inlet valve. |
A Good Sauna Will Help You Fight Off The Viruses
Regular sauna baths boost the immune system and keep us healthy during the virus-infested winter season. Sauna’s healthy effect can be explained by two things, mucus and heat. A fair warning: the following is based on scientific research. Some basic facts first. The blanket of mucus in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses form the first line of defence against viruses. Despite its nasty name, this watery mucus is highly useful—it catches virus particles and stops them from entering our organism. We then expel the foreign particles and pathogens by sneezing, coughing and blowing our nose, thereby cleaning the blanket of mucus. Every child is thought to use a hanky to cover her nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing to prevent the virus from spreading. And we are all learning how to wear face masks to stop the COVID-19 pandemic for the same reason. Dry air inhibits mucus regenerationMost virus particles are caught by the layer of mucus before they can do harm. However, sometimes the air we breathe dries up the watery mucus, making it easy for the viruses to enter the body. Dry air is perfect for different viruses, including the coronavirus which causes the COVID-19 pandemic, rhinovirus and the influenza virus. Human beings feel comfortable if the indoor humidity is between 25%–70%.[1] But if the relative humidity drops below 20%, the blanket of mucus dries up and our defense against viruses is impaired.[2] In consequence, viruses enter our body and we may fall ill. Sauna to the rescueThe relative humidity in a typical svideoauna is only 10–20%. Yet few people take sauna baths without throwing water on the stove. This activity drastically increases air humidity (up to 80%) and creates perfect conditions for regenerating mucus and repairing tissue. After the layer of mucus is restored in the humid air we are again prepared to fight off viruses—virus particles will be trapped inside the new watery layer on our nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. High temperature vs. common coldEven if some viruses slip through the first line of defence, sauna’s hot air will kill them off quickly. Many viruses do not tolerate hight temperatures. Human rhinoviruses which cause common cold is one such virus. According to different studies, rhinoviruses reproduce in temperatures lower than 33°C (91°F). It is probably for this reason that rhinoviruses cause upper respiratory infections as they cannot survive deep in the human body where temperatures are higher. Spending only 20 minutes at 45°C (113°F) activates our immune system and reduces rhinovirus’ capability to multiply more than 90%.[3] In sum, sauna is less than an ideal place for rhinoviruses as well as many other viruses. Sauna and COVID-19Also the coronavirus does not like high temperatures, albeit for a different reason. Coronaviruses are surrounded by an envelope which protects the virus when traveling from one host cell to another. Such viruses are relatively resistant to cold and therefore are more likely to cause sickness in winter months. However, the protective lipid envelope is destroyed if the temperature is held between 55–65°C (131–149°F) for 15–30 minutes.[4] Only one minute will do if the temperature is 80°C (176°F). Human beings can endure such heat, the virus can not. In addition, coronavirus does not tolerate an alkaline environment. In the intense heat of sauna, our breathing becomes deeper and more frequent. This makes our blood pH levels rise. Different strands of the coronavirus cannot reproduce in such conditions, become inactive or disintegrate complete.[5] Is it really so simple? The conclusion seems obvious—taking sauna baths regularly will protect us against viruses. Alas it is not that simple. We have to keep in mind that, even if the sauna thermometer reaches 120°C (248°F), the core temperature of our body rises no more than a few degrees. Yet the virus particles that have already entered into our organism are untouched by the high environmental temperatures and remain intact. Taking sauna baths is not a miracle cure against viruses if we are already sick. Sauna can be used as a preventive measure to boost our immune system, regenerate the mucus blanket in our nasal cavity, and kill off free virus particles in our upper respiratory tracts. But it will not cure us. Even though in most cases taking sauna baths may be good for us, it is best to avoid sauna if you are already sick. Because our body is weak, it cannot deal with sudden and steep temperature changes. A sick and already weak organism simply cannot take it. We may easily weaken our organism further by exposing our sweaty body to colder temperatures in the antechamber or outside. |

About Heaters
What is unique about HUUM sauna?HUUM heaters’ minimalist and rounded design makes them some of the most elegant sauna heaters available. Thanks to an exceptionally high stone capacity they provide mild and long-lasting steam similar to traditional saunas. Little metal is used in the heaters, so the heat comes mainly from the stones and not from heated metal. This means there are more negative ions in the air, which are known to be beneficial for health. Using the heater together with a UKU Wi-Fi or GSM controller allows you to heat your sauna comfortably from your mobile phone. |
What size saunas are HUUM heaters suitable for?Among HUUM heaters you can find suitable models for both small and big sauna rooms with volumes ranging from 3-35 m³. |
How do I choose a heater with the right output?
Heater output should be chosen based on the sauna room size and insulation. As a rule of thumb, you need 1 kW of power to heat 1 m³ of the sauna room. If the heater is too small it will heat the sauna too slowly, it won’t provide enough steam and it might burn out quicker. However, a heater that is slightly too powerful won’t cause trouble if it has a thermostat and it is used correctly. The second important thing to consider is how the sauna room is insulated. In case there are any uninsulated brick, tile, glass or log walls in the sauna room, an additional volume of 1.5 m³ for each m² of such wall should be added to the sauna room size calculation. You can use our sauna calculator to find out the volume of your sauna room. To calculate it yourself, multiply the height by the width and the length in meters. Then calculate the sum of uninsulated brick, tile, glass or log surfaces (m²), multiply it by 1.5 and add it to the previous result. As a result, you will have your sauna room volume in m³, based on which you can choose the suitable heater output. If the result falls between two different output values, we recommend choosing the bigger one. |
How long does it take to heat the sauna? If the heater is the right size, the heating speed is about 10°C per approximately every 8 minutes, reaching 80 °C in one hour. |
What kind of stones can be used with HUUM heaters? We recommend using natural and rounded sauna stove stones. In our selection, we have olivine diabase stones, which are light grey, rounded and with high heat capacity. Do not use decorative stones in the heater because they can easily break. |
How long does it take to heat the sauna? If the heater is the right size, the heating speed is about 10°C per approximately every 8 minutes, reaching 80 °C in one hour. |
What material are HUUM heaters made of?HUUM heaters are made of stainless steel. Read more about the production on the Craftsmanship page. |
How long is the guarantee? All HUUM sauna heaters have a 5-year guarantee. |
What is included in the set?The set includes the heater and adjustable legs (HIVE) or wall mount (DROP). The set does not include: stones, controller, power cable. |
Who can install the heater?Only a certified electrician should install the cables and connect the heater to the power supply. |
How can I replace my existing sauna heater with a HUUM heater?
If you have a sauna heater with a controller with a temperature control function, just replace the heater. Install the heater according to the product installation manual and with the help of a certified electrician. Do you have a mechanical sauna heater without a controller (the switch is on the heater)? In that case, you will need a controller with temperature control function and you will need to set up some cables. Follow the instructions from the product installation manuals and do it with the help of a certified electrician. You might need to open up some walls and install new cables. |
Which kind of wiring will I need? You will find the instructions for installing cables from our product installation manuals. Cables need to be installed by a certified electrician. |

The electric heater stopped heating up
Are the heating elements working properly? To find that out, remove some stones and check if the heating elements turn red while heating. If a heating element does not turn red it is broken and needs to be replaced before further using.
If the previous steps did not provide a solution, the problem may be in the main module. In that case, contact us and send us photos of the wiring of the heater and the main module. |

User Guides: Using The Heater
What is the correct way to pour water onto the heater?Pouring water onto the hot stones in the heater is how you can regulate the humidity in the sauna. To do this right, wait until the stones are hot enough to make the water evaporate. In order to prevent the stones from breaking you should use hot tap water. The water should be as clean as possible and you should avoid using very hard water or water that is high in iron. We recommend throwing approximately 250 ml of water at a time. If you need more steam, wait a few minutes and throw some more water on the stones. Doing so allows the stones to dry and regain the heat between the pourings. If you notice water running out from the bottom of the heater, it means you have poured too much water or that the stones are not hot enough. |
How often do the stones need to be replaced? It depends on how often do you use your sauna. If you use your sauna 3 times a week, you might need to replace the stones about once a year. If you use the sauna less, you probably should replace the stones every couple of years. To understand if the stones need changing you should check their condition once a year or after 300 hours of heating. Read more about it in the stones chapter. |
Electric heater maintenance
|
How often do the heating elements need to be changed?Heating elements need to be changed only when they break. |
Can I use my electric heater if a heating element is broken? You can verify if heating elements are broken by removing some stones and checking if the heating elements turn red during heating. If a heating element doesn’t turn red, it is broken. When this happens, the broken heating element needs to be replaced immediately. Otherwise you risk breaking also the functioning ones. Only an authorized electrical engineer can change the heating elements. |
How to keep the sauna clean?
Between heatings, when the sauna is not hot and there is still a lot of humidity, unwanted bacteria may start thriving in the sauna. To avoid this, it is important to take care of the cleanliness of the sauna. Here are a couple of tips for keeping your sauna clean.

Heat Your Sauna Comportably With HUUM Mobile App
Benefit
The main benefit of this is you don’t even have to be home to heat your sauna. You could be anywhere and have your sauna hot and ready at exactly the moment you step in the door. This is a great advantage for many home sauna owners as well as accommodation establishments. Continue reading and discover:

Save time with HUUM mobile app
A HUUM sauna controller with the mobile app remote control option has two important advantages. Firstly, it saves you a lot of time. Let’s say heating the sauna takes about an hour. With a regular sauna controller, it would mean that once you arrive home you would still have to wait an hour before you can actually use it. With a mobile app remote control, you can start heating the sauna even without being home yet. You can just activate the sauna heater from your phone and spend that hour finishing up at work or exercising at the gym. In moments when you need a hot sauna the most, you don’t have to wait for it. Maybe you have just spent an entire day skiing or you’re on your way back from a long trip. What could be more welcoming and regenerating than a hot sauna waiting for you the moment you step through the door. We asked our customers how is the mobile app working for them and how are they using it. Harry from Finland wrote us this: “Yes, I use the HUUM app frequently, in fact, I always switch the sauna on with the app, whether I am at home or not. When I’m sitting on the sofa – yes, why not switch the sauna on from the phone? When I’m in the garden – there’s no need to go inside the house, I just switch it on while I’m outside. When I’m shopping in the city center, working late at the office or walking outside with my dog – why not switch the sauna on to have it ready by the time I’m back home? It’s simple and easy.” Another useful aspect is that you don’t have to be physically present to heat the sauna. Here lies a great opportunity for the owners of Airbnb apartments, guesthouses and other accommodation establishments looking to offer something special to their guests. Adam Rang from Estonian Saunas is already using this smart sauna solution with his Airbnb guests in Tallinn. He provides his guests with sauna log-in information before their journey there. This way the guests can activate the sauna heater accordingly to their travel schedule and have a hot sauna waiting for them on their arrival. Also, during their stay in Tallinn, they can always set the sauna to a perfect temperature for their return to the apartment after having spent an entire day exploring the city. |
HUUM mobile app works with UKU Wi-Fi and UKU GSM sauna controllers
If you would like to heat your sauna with the HUUM app you first need to purchase a sauna controller with that feature. So, you should have either UKU Wi-Fi or UKU GSM controller installed in your sauna. These controllers can be used with any manufacturer’s electric heaters as long as they work with remote control and have a temperature control function. Once the controller is in place, all you need to do is download the HUUM app into your phone and connect it to your controller. To do that, just follow the instructions on the screen and insert your sauna controller’s ID and code when requested. After that, you are ready to heat your sauna from the app and enjoy all its features. |
Prepare your sauna experience with a few taps on the phone
HUUM mobile app is about more than just switching the sauna heater on and off. It provides several useful features for adjusting your sauna experience to your wishes. First, let’s go over the basic functions. When it comes to heating, you can choose the beginning and end time of the heating and set the desired temperature. Thanks to the door sensor of the UKU control unit, the app will know if you have left your sauna room door open and will not allow heating in that case. While the sauna is heating, you can check the current temperature at any moment to see how it’s proceeding. If you already know exactly what time you need your sauna to be hot, the timer function comes in handy. Just activate the timer and have the sauna heated exactly by the time you arrive home from a workout or in time for a sauna party. HUUM sauna controllers can be connected to the lights, ventilation and steamer functions which can be controlled through the mobile app as well. In order to do that you must first activate these functions from the control panel on the wall. The number of app users is unlimited. Anybody who has the sauna controller ID numbers can download the app and connect it to the heater. This way all the family members can heat the sauna from the app and always see if the sauna is already being heated. Friends invited over for a sauna session can keep an eye on the sauna temperature to know if it is ready yet. HUUM mobile app comes in the following 6 languages: English, German, Russian, Italian, Finnish and Estonian. |
Innovative sauna controllers for modern sauna lovers
If you value time and appreciate comfort, heating the sauna through HUUM mobile app might just bring your sauna to a new level. This easy and time-saving sauna controlling solution helps to better insert enjoyable sauna moments into a busy modern lifestyle. To find out more about HUUM mobile app sauna controllers take a look at the product pages of UKU Wi-Fi controller and UKU GSM controller.
