What Exactly Is A Steam Shower?

A steam shower heats water until it vaporizes and then pumps that delicious steam into an enclosed area for your enjoyment. It’s a simple idea—but doing it efficiently, reliably, and beautifully is an art and a science that we’ve spent decades mastering. 	Generator The steam room generator powers your steam system by boiling water. It’s about the size of a briefcase, though the exact size varies based on your shower’s construction. It can be installed up to 60 ft away in a closet, vanity, attic, or basement - basically any dry, heated location - with 12 inches of space around the generator for ventilation.
	Control Installed inside the shower and away from the direct steam flow, the control lets you manage your steam session. You can choose to control everything from temperature and duration to music, lighting, and aromatherapy.
	Steamhead This is where the steam is released. It's installed on the shower wall, about 6-12 inches above the floor and opposite the seating area.
	Plumbing and Power Your system will run on low-voltage household electric power (208v or 240v). You will need a water line to the steam bath generator, a steam line from generator to shower, and a drain line.

Does My Existing Tub/Shower Need To Be Modified?   Most do, while others may not need to be. All have to be water tight on all walls and the ceiling. A licensed contractor who is familiar with steam can help you make that happen. We do recommend ceiling heights be no higher than 8’. You only need to tile and water seal the portion of the ceiling that will be directly exposed to the steam (inside the steam shower). The primary purpose is to retain heat and prevent moisture from escaping the shower enclosure.

What Determines The Size Of A Mrsteam Steam Shower Generator?   The size of your shower enclosure, in total cubic feet, along with finish material, will determine which MrSteam generator you will need. The larger the space, the more steam you need to fill it. And the more steam you need, the larger the generator needs to be. You may be reconfiguring a current shower for steam or constructing an entirely new space – large or small. We do recommend that your shower enclosure not be smaller than 3’ x 3’ x 7’. That way you have enough space to stand or sit a safe distance from the steam head. In all cases, there are a few criteria to take into account when selecting the right generator size: The steam shower dimensions: length, width, height. Multiply each to determine your total room volume in cubic feet. The materials for the shower walls and ceiling each have different heat retention properties, and this will be a factor in the generator you choose

How Much Water Does A Steam Shower Use – And How Much Does It Cost To Operate?   You may be surprised to learn that energy usage for a MrSteam steam shower is typically less than $1 for an average steam shower session. To produce the steam needed for a typical 20-minute steam bathing session, a home steam generator only needs to heat two gallons of water—much less water than you use in a bath or shower! A week’s worth of steam sessions uses only 14 gallons of water.

How Does A Home Steam Shower Work?   A steam generator, typically no larger than a briefcase and often installed in a vanity or closet, heats the water to a boil. You push a button, delivering the resulting steam from the generator to the steam head outlet and into your shower enclosure. And then you relax and enjoy the luxury of steam. It's really quite simple.

When/Where Did Steam Bathing Begin?   The desire to cleanse, purify and enjoy steam in a communal setting stretches back as far as the Bronze Age. Steam bathing has always been a way to meet and socialize, relax and leave behind the stress of the day – whether that be in the thermae of ancient Rome, the sweat lodges of the Native Americans or the spring-fed onsen of the Japanese.

What Kind Of Wall And Ceiling Materials Are Best For Constructing A Steam Shower?   The more porous a material (e.g., marble, shale, granite, glass block, or concrete), the more quickly it will dissipate heat, rather than retaining it. If you choose the natural beauty of marble or stone for your steam shower, be sure to select a more powerful generator to compensate for the faster heat loss. Conversely, choosing nonporous materials like ceramic, porcelain or acrylic, will retain heat in the shower, and a smaller generator will be adequate.

To maximize space in smaller showers, you might opt for a fold-up seat, such as the MrSteam teak seat, coated for moisture protection. Some users opt for a tiled bench that can be installed diagonally in a corner or along a wall, opposite the steam head.

What Is The Minimum Size For A Steam Shower?   We recommend that your shower enclosure be a minimum of 3’ x 3’ x 7’. That way you have enough space to safely stand or sit on a fold-up seat installed across from the steam head.

Is It Ok To Have A Window In My Steam Shower?   While a window in the shower is common in some homes, many homeowners are concerned about steam (moisture) getting between the window and the outside wall. For steam showers that have an exterior window, you need to make sure they are properly insulated to prevent steam from escaping. We recommend using double-paned windows. If your window slides open, make sure it is gasketed to prevent steam loss during a shower.

Can I Include A Transom In My Steam Shower?   Some people have a transom window in their shower (think of a horizontal window that sits above a door, which sometimes is hinged to allow air movement). Although this window is mostly a design choice, it offers the practical benefit of allowing air into the shower when steam is not used. This allows moisture to exit from the enclosure (compared to a closed, air tight door). Just make sure it’s closed during a steam shower.

Do I Need To Slope My Steam Shower’s Ceiling?   Small grouted ceiling tiles tend to drip at the edges. As a result, smaller tiles with many grout joints may require a slight slope to prevent condensation from dripping down on top of the unsuspecting bather. In a residential setting, slope the ceiling 1/2" per foot away from where you will be sitting. If you use a solid material for your ceiling, like a sheet of Swanstone, you may not need a slope since it doesn’t trap condensation the same way grouted tiles do.

Can I Install Lighting In My Steam Shower?   When installing a light in a steam shower, make sure it is vapor proof and provides protection against moisture entry. The light is typically protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), which will shut off the power if it detects moisture in the fixture. MrSteam manufactures both recessed and surface mounted lights that are UL and cETus listed.

What Should I Do If My Steam Generator Starts Leaking Water?   Your steam generator should not leak, but in the event that it does, turn off the water along with the unit’s power supply. How to Seal Your Steam Shower Windows   Imagine that the personal steam spa sanctuary you have in mind is one where the outdoors seems to be one with indoors. Expansive windows bring sunlight and greenery inside. As you step into your glass enclosed steam shower, and billowy steam fills the space, you bask in the sunny green-tinted mist and feel the weight of the world leave your shoulders… That vision is totally doable as long as you – or rather your installation professional – properly seal your steam shower windows and doors. So, let’s talk about it. Why Is Sealing Steam Shower Windows And Doors So Important? Sealed windows and doors mean that your steam shower will do what it’s supposed to do: provide you with a steam room experience in an enclosure where steam doesn’t escape and drafts can’t get you. There are two aspects to ensuring that perfect steam shower experience: Windows in your steam shower enclosure that face and may open to the outside The glass windows, panels and doors around your steam shower enclosure Let’s explore both and how to ensure each is properly sealed. How To Seal An Exterior Window In A Steam Shower A poorly insulated window anywhere in your home is problematic. Even more when you have an exterior window in your steam sanctuary. Not only can it lead to energy loss, but also to uncomfortable drafts that completely take away from your relaxing SteamTherapy wellness session. An exterior window connects the inside of your home to the outside; it visually brings the natural world into your home. However, since it interacts with the outdoors, it also has to deal with temperature changes that can stress the window materials through expansion and contraction. Furthermore, according to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, heat naturally moves toward cold surfaces. If your exterior steam shower window isn’t properly sealed, that steamy vapor will escape outdoors or penetrate the window itself. Advice On Sealing Your Steam Shower Exterior Windows So you can experience the outdoors in your steam room on your terms only (i.e., the steam stays in and the cold air stays out), here is advice for dealing with those exterior windows. Kris Lee, MrSteam Regional Sales Manager who started out in technical support, explains that for maximum protection you should ensure that your external window is composed of double paned glass to prevent any heat or cold from coming in or going out. The editors at Fine Homebuilding magazine encourage the use of vinyl-clad windows housed in a wooden jamb, cement backer board, a waterproof membrane, and a good quality silicone caulk. About the window, they explain, “The vinyl provides maintenance-free protection from moisture for the window itself. The all-wood jamb provides a flat and sound base. Make sure that you locate the window outside the range of the spray from the showerhead.” And, ‘When the tile is complete and the grout is sealed, use a good silicone caulk where any two planes come together, like where the window meets the newly tiled jamb.’ They also recommend checking every year to anticipate cracked joints that you might caulk or grout if necessary. How To Seal The Glass Windows, Panels And Doors Around Your Steam Spa For The Best Puffy White Steam Next is sealing the glass windows, large glass doors and side panels that face inside your home and allow even more light into your steam shower. Your personal steam shower needs to be enclosed and insulated to keep the soothing steam in place. It should be equipped with a water-tight shower door, too. And although the shower space needs to be water-tight, it does not have to be air-tight. In fact, some air infiltration, especially around the shower door, allows you to see the steam form. “When your shower is completely water-tight, you get that puffy white vapor that is integral to the steam experience,” says Lee. "Create a water-tight seal steam shower door seal--rather than just an air-tight one--to get the best puffy white steam." Advice On Sealing Glass Windows, Panels And Doors According to Lee, it’s best to seal doors and glass panels with a glazing gasket or strips. These gaskets or strips are made of rubber; they go on each side of the glass, holding it in place while keeping moisture in the shower area. Similarly, add a silicone weather strip at the bottom of the glass door for a better seal. The editors of Buildipedia say the key to successfully installing waterproof glass panels is to lay down a thick bead of silicone caulk on shower curbs and side rails, as well as any joints where the frames meet the walls. Bonus Tip: How To Ventilate Your Sealed Steam Shower So you’ve taken care of properly sealing all your windows, glass panels and doors, and can go about regularly enjoying all of your steam shower’s steamy goodness. Here’s how to easily let that steam out when you’re done: Turn on your shower to condense the remaining steam in the enclosure before stepping out. Use an exhaust fan. Standard exhaust fans (located outside of your steam shower) will remove the moist air from your bathroom. Install a louver. When opened, a louver will let air out of your steam shower so the exhaust fan can take care of it. Reminder: No heating, venting or air conditioning devices should be installed inside the steam room! In short, if you do have windows in your steam shower, you don’t need to worry.
