What Exactly Is A Steam Shower?

A steam shower heats water until it vaporizes and then pumps that delicious steam into an enclosed area for your enjoyment. It’s a simple idea—but doing it efficiently, reliably, and beautifully is an art and a science that we’ve spent decades mastering. 	Generator The steam room generator powers your steam system by boiling water. It’s about the size of a briefcase, though the exact size varies based on your shower’s construction. It can be installed up to 60 ft away in a closet, vanity, attic, or basement - basically any dry, heated location - with 12 inches of space around the generator for ventilation.
	Control Installed inside the shower and away from the direct steam flow, the control lets you manage your steam session. You can choose to control everything from temperature and duration to music, lighting, and aromatherapy.
	Steamhead This is where the steam is released. It's installed on the shower wall, about 6-12 inches above the floor and opposite the seating area.
	Plumbing and Power Your system will run on low-voltage household electric power (208v or 240v). You will need a water line to the steam bath generator, a steam line from generator to shower, and a drain line.

Size We offer different generators for different size showers. High ceilings or particularly large spaces will require a larger steam room generator. Our Virtual Spa tool can help you figure out what you need​.

Materials Most shower enclosures use one or more of these materials: tile, natural stone, acrylic, fiberglass, or composites. Each material has different heat retention properties, and this will be a factor in the generator you choose.

Construction Your shower must be enclosed, insulated, and sealed. Windows, if any, should be double-paned. If you’re tiling your shower, be aware that larger tiles are friendlier to steam because they collect less condensation.

Ventilation There should be no heating, venting or air-conditioning components inside the steam room. All light fixtures must be vapor-sealed.​​

How To Control Your MrSteam System With Amazon Alexa When SteamLinx Is Installed

MrSteam residential steam shower systems now work with Amazon Alexa when SteamLinx is installed. You can “talk” to your steam shower through Alexa. Ask questions, get helpful answers or give basic commands on settings and functions.

What can you do?   Turn on your steam generator. Set the temperature. Set the duration. Turn off your steam generator. You can even ask Alexa questions. Is the steam generator on? How much time is left? What is the room temperature? What is the temperature set to?

Set up Amazon Alexa for your MrSteam System   First, make sure that your SteamLinx is installed and linked to your home WiFi network. Next, open the Amazon Alexa app and go to Skills & Games using the top left menu. Now search for and find the MrSteam SteamLinx skill. Once the skill appears, you just need to select it. The next step is to enable the skill by tapping the Enable button. The app will then prompt the login page of the SteamLinx app. Enter your SteamLinx credentials to link the skill to your MrSteam system. After you get to the successfully linked page, test the skill with your Alexa device.

Here's how to test:   Start by Saying: “Alexa, ask MrSteam to start the steam bath." “Alexa, ask MrSteam to stop the steam bath." “Alexa, ask MrSteam what the room temperature is set to." Note: Only one MrSteam system can be linked at a time. You will be prompted to select a MrSteam system if you have more than one associated with your SteamLinx account. If you have more than one, you will need to alternate between them by disabling the skill and re-enabling/linking it to one of the other spas. If the steps above did not work, verify that the correct account/skill/MrSteam system was used/selected. If they were, disable the skill and try linking it again.

A licensed contractor who is familiar with steam can help you make that happen. We do recommend ceiling heights be no higher than 8’. You only need to tile and water seal the portion of the ceiling that will be directly exposed to the steam (inside the steam shower). The primary purpose is to retain heat and prevent moisture from escaping the shower enclosure.

What Determines The Size Of A Mrsteam Steam Shower Generator?   The size of your shower enclosure, in total cubic feet, along with finish material, will determine which MrSteam generator you will need. The larger the space, the more steam you need to fill it. And the more steam you need, the larger the generator needs to be. Conversely, choosing nonporous materials like ceramic, porcelain or acrylic, will retain heat in the shower, and a smaller generator will be adequate.

Some users opt for a tiled bench that can be installed diagonally in a corner or along a wall, opposite the steam head.

What Is The Minimum Size For A Steam Shower?   We recommend that your shower enclosure be a minimum of 3’ x 3’ x 7’. That way you have enough space to safely stand or sit on a fold-up seat installed across from the steam head.

Is It Ok To Have A Window In My Steam Shower?   While a window in the shower is common in some homes, many homeowners are concerned about steam (moisture) getting between the window and the outside wall. For steam showers that have an exterior window, you need to make sure they are properly insulated to prevent steam from escaping. We recommend using double-paned windows. If your window slides open, make sure it is gasketed to prevent steam loss during a shower.

Can I Include A Transom In My Steam Shower?   Some people have a transom window in their shower (think of a horizontal window that sits above a door, which sometimes is hinged to allow air movement). Although this window is mostly a design choice, it offers the practical benefit of allowing air into the shower when steam is not used. This allows moisture to exit from the enclosure (compared to a closed, air tight door). Just make sure it’s closed during a steam shower.

Do I Need To Slope My Steam Shower’s Ceiling?   Small grouted ceiling tiles tend to drip at the edges. As a result, smaller tiles with many grout joints may require a slight slope to prevent condensation from dripping down on top of the unsuspecting bather. In a residential setting, slope the ceiling 1/2" per foot away from where you will be sitting. If you use a solid material for your ceiling, like a sheet of Swanstone, you may not need a slope since it doesn’t trap condensation the same way grouted tiles do.

Can I Install Lighting In My Steam Shower?   When installing a light in a steam shower, make sure it is vapor proof and provides protection against moisture entry. The light is typically protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), which will shut off the power if it detects moisture in the fixture. MrSteam manufactures both recessed and surface mounted lights that are UL and cETus listed.

What Should I Do If My Steam Generator Starts Leaking Water?   Your steam generator should not leak, but in the event that it does, turn off the water along with the unit’s power supply. So, let’s talk about it. Why Is Sealing Steam Shower Windows And Doors So Important? Sealed windows and doors mean that your steam shower will do what it’s supposed to do: provide you with a steam room experience in an enclosure where steam doesn’t escape and drafts can’t get you. There are two aspects to ensuring that perfect steam shower experience: Windows in your steam shower enclosure that face and may open to the outside The glass windows, panels and doors around your steam shower enclosure Let’s explore both and how to ensure each is properly sealed. How To Seal An Exterior Window In A Steam Shower A poorly insulated window anywhere in your home is problematic. Even more when you have an exterior window in your steam sanctuary. Not only can it lead to energy loss, but also to uncomfortable drafts that completely take away from your relaxing SteamTherapy wellness session. An exterior window connects the inside of your home to the outside; it visually brings the natural world into your home. However, since it interacts with the outdoors, it also has to deal with temperature changes that can stress the window materials through expansion and contraction. Furthermore, according to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, heat naturally moves toward cold surfaces. If your exterior steam shower window isn’t properly sealed, that steamy vapor will escape outdoors or penetrate the window itself. Advice On Sealing Your Steam Shower Exterior Windows So you can experience the outdoors in your steam room on your terms only (i.e., the steam stays in and the cold air stays out), here is advice for dealing with those exterior windows. Standard exhaust fans (located outside of your steam shower) will remove the moist air from your bathroom. Install a louver. We don't ship internationally, but we can ship your order to a freight forwarder of your choice.

Damages:

It is critical that you inspect the packaging of all items when they arrive and check if you received all boxes listed on the delivery receipt. If you notice any damage or shortage of packages, you must make a note of it on the bill of lading, take pictures, and refuse delivery. Your note should say "refused due to damage". If there are no damages visible before opening the box, you must note "subject to further inspection may contain concealed damage". By signing a freight delivery without making any notes, you accept the product as it is and release the seller from any liability. If you notice any damage after receiving the delivery, do not throw the box away, and contact us with the photos of all sides of the packaged goods within 2 business days. We cannot process your claim if you fail to send images within 2 business days. After we receive information from you about the refused delivery or concealed damage, we immediately initiate a claim with the shipping company or with the manufacturer. After the claim is fully processed, we ship all replacements at absolutely no cost to you.

Cancellations & Returns:

We can cancel your order at absolutely no cost to you before the shipping label or Bill of Lading has been created, or before production of a custom order has started. Custom made items are not eligible for cancellations or returns after production has started. You can return all non-custom made items within 30 days of delivery, except when noted otherwise on their product page. To be eligible for a return, the item must be unused and in the same condition as you received it. It must also remain in the original packaging, and the packaging must be in perfect resellable condition. The cost of shipping the product both ways (to the customer, and back to the warehouse) and a 25% restocking fee will be deducted from the refund. Orders delivered outside the United States are not eligible for refunds. If your order arrived damaged, "Damages" section applies. Please contact us before returning your order to discuss shipping details. All refunds will be issued to the credit card you used for your purchase within 2 days after all returned items arrived at the warehouse. If a credit card refund is not possible, we will issue a direct deposit.
